“Una follia per Adriana” nuova via sul Cervino per Cazzanelli & Co.

Nuova linea molto logica sulla sud, ma che necessita di condizioni particolari.

Martedì 6 febbraio, gli alpinisti italiani Francois Cazzanelli, Jerome Perruquet, Marco Farina e Stefano Stradelli hanno aperto una nuova via sulla parete sud del Cervino (4.478 m).
La nuova linea prende il nome di “Una Follia per Adriana” – Il Grande Diedro dalla Sud.
La nuova via si trova sulla selvaggia, esposta e raramente scalata parete sud del Cervino, tra il Picco Muzio (4.187 m) e il Pilastro dei Fiori (4.000 m). La via, che comprende 300 metri di arrampicata nel canalone di neve e altri 500 metri di misto/roccia, comprende 11 tiri, con un grado complessivo di M7, 6B e R4. Il team aveva effettuato un primo tentativo della nuova linea la settimana precedente (31 gennaio), ma aveva dovuto ritirarsi a causa di problemi imprevisti sulla via. Tornando con una nuova strategia per il secondo tentativo, il team è partito alle 4.30 del mattino da Seggiovia Pancheron e ha raggiunto la vetta intorno alle 16.30 dello stesso giorno.

“Avevo notato questo percorso mentre mi allenavo sugli sci con mio cugino Teto. Ne avevo subito parlato con Marco (pure lui l’aveva notata qualche anno fa). Abbiamo chiamato Jerome e Stefano e la squadra era pronta.
Al primo tentativo non avevamo una strategia chiara o una idea di come sarebbe stato il percorso. Non ci aspettavamo una parete così severa e verticale, a tratti strapiombante. Il problema era che non avevamo un piano chiaro. Ci siamo anche resi conto abbastanza rapidamente che la scalata di questa via richiede condizioni meteorologiche e montane particolari. Nonostante ciò, quel giorno siamo riusciti a salire 6 tiri della via, con Jerome che ne ha saliti 4 e io e Marco gli altri 2.
Il martedì è stato semplicemente perfetto. L’umore del team era super buono e le condizioni perfette! Dopo alcuni giorni troppo caldi, le temperature erano scese e il cielo era nuvoloso – perfetto per noi! Le condizioni della via erano un po’ secche, ma comunque buone!
Jerome ha salito velocemente i primi 4 tiri, io i due successivi e alle 11:00 eravamo già al punto più alto del primo tentativo. Durante questo primo tentativo siamo arrivati solo alle 16:00. A quel punto ho indossato le scarpe da roccia e ho aperto i due tiri successivi. Il primo è stato molto impressionante, un gigantesco off-width con molta aria sotto il sedere e con la parte inferiore del diedro completamente ghiacciata!

La seconda è stata più facile, ma la placca iniziale mi ha messo a dura prova. Poi è stato il turno di Marco che ha aperto un tiro con roccia molto brutta!!! L’ultima sezione è stata più facile e finalmente siamo usciti al sole sotto l’enorme blocco che domina il diedro.
Vogliamo dedicare questa nuova via e il suo nome alla compianta Adriana Pession. Adriana ha lavorato tutta la vita come segretaria della Società delle Guide Alpine del Cervino ed è stata come una seconda mamma per tutti noi Guide Alpine del gruppo. Siamo orgogliosi di poter aprire questa via in suo nome”.

On Tuesday 6th of February, Italian alpinists Francois Cazzanelli, Jerome Perruquet, Marco Farina and Stefano Stradelli established a new route on the South Face of the Matterhorn (4,478m).
Their new line, is named ‘Una Follia per Adriana’ – The Great Dihedral of The South Face (Il Grande Diedro dalla Sud, in Italian).
The new route is located on the wild, exposed and rarely climbed South Face of The Matterhorn, sitting between Picco Muzio (4,187m) and the Pilastro dei Fiori (4,000m). Encompassing 300m of climbing in the snow couloir and another 500m of mixed/rock climbing, the route comprises 11 pitches, with an overall grade of M7, 6B ,R4.
The team made a first attempt of the new line during the previous week (January 31st), but had to make a retreat, due to unforeseen challenges on the route. Returning with a new strategy for the second attempt, the team set off at 4.30am from Seggiovia Pancheron and summited around 4.30pm on the same day.

“I saw this route while training on skis with my cousin Teto. I immediately talked about it with Marco and he too had noticed it some years ago. We called Jerome and Stefano and the team was ready
In the first attempt we didn’t have a clear enough strategy or understanding of how the route would be. We didn’t expect such a severe and vertical wall, which is sometimes overhanging. The problem was that we didn’t have a clear plan. We also realized quite quickly that climbing this route requires particular weather and mountain conditions. Even so, on that day, we managed to climb 6 pitches of the route, with Jerome leading 4 and myself and Marco the other 2.
On Tuesday, it was simply perfect. The mood of the team super good and perfect conditions! After a few too hot days the temperatures had dropped and the sky was cloudy – perfect for us! The route conditions were a little dry but still good!
Jerome quickly reclimbed the first 4 pitches, I did the next two and at 11:00 we were already at our high point from the first attempt. During that first attempt we were only there at 16:00. At that point I put on my rock shoes and opened the next two pitches. The first was very impressive, a gigantic off-width with a lot of air under my butt and with the bottom of the dihedral totally frozen up!
The second one was easier but the initial slab put me to the test. Then it was Marco’s turn who opened a pitch with very bad rock!! The last section was easier and we finally went out into the sun under the huge block overlooking the dihedral.
We want to dedicate this new route, and its name to the late Adriana Pession. Adriana worked her whole life as the Secretary of the Cervino Society of Alpine Guides and was like a second Mum to all of us Mountain Guides here. We’re proud to be able to establish this route in her name”.
