Volker Schöffl lascia la commissione medica IFSC “per protesta contro l’inazione” a riguardo della perdita di peso degli atleti

Il medico ha pubblicato un comunicato sulla sua pagina FB; potrebbe essere un importante passo verso la disciplina di una materia ignorata ma presentissima sin da quando sono nate le gare. Pareti fece due anni fa un lunghissimo special sull’argomento. Come già allora, pubblichiamo la foto di Salomè Romain, la top climber francese che è la risposta vivente alla assurdità del perseguire a tutti costi la strada dell’anoressia sportiva. Si può essere sé stessi ed essere fortissimi. Il problema, lo sappiamo tutti, è anche italiano.

“In conseguenza della mancata azione dell’IFSC mi dimetto con effetto immediato dalla mia posizione volontaria nella Commissione medica IFSC.
Con la presente traggo le stesse conseguenze del nostro presidente MedCom. Condividiamo l’opinione che come medici non possiamo più accettare la non azione dell’IFSC riguardo ai problemi RED-S dei nostri atleti.
Sono membro di #MedCom sin dall’inaugurazione dell’IFSC nel 2009. Durante quel lasso di tempo abbiamo raggiunto molti obiettivi per il benessere dei nostri atleti. Tuttavia, l’attuale politica riguardo a RED-S non può essere accettata. Abbiamo lavorato per più di 10 anni sull’argomento. Abbiamo raccolto numerosi dati, misurato il BMI/MI ad ogni WorldCup dello scorso anno e abbiamo sviluppato piani molto approfonditi su come rilevare e aiutare gli atleti con tali problemi. Abbiamo trascorso molte ore in riunioni e sulla scrivania stabilendo un nuovo e migliore sistema di monitoraggio e processo decisionale. Di conseguenza, ora disponiamo dei dati più approfonditi su questa materia di tutte le discipline sportive. Abbiamo segnalato continuamente e ripetutamente il problema e le possibili soluzioni al direttore sportivo e al consiglio. Tuttavia, l’unico riconoscimento che abbiamo ricevuto è consistito nella diffamazione e nello scoraggiamento. In breve, l’IFSC non sembrerebbe disposto a intraprendere ulteriori azioni in merito a questo importante problema di salute dei suoi atleti e sta attivamente ritardando e rallentando qualsiasi decisione che potrebbe portare a un’azione tanto necessaria.
Come medici non possiamo più accettarlo.
L’arrampicata sportiva ha un problema RED-S.
Attraverso la Commissione medica sono state sviluppate possibili soluzioni per rilevare, valutare e aiutare gli atleti critici.
Queste soluzioni sono state e vengono ignorate. Nessuna ulteriore azione viene intrapresa dall’IFSC.
Per il benessere dei nostri atleti e lo sviluppo di questo sport, non posso assumermi alcuna responsabilità in merito e sono costretto a dimettermi.
Mille grazie ai miei colleghi e amici di lunga data della Commissione medica per il loro lavoro e i loro sforzi, in particolare al nostro presidente Dr.Eugen Burtscher.
Spero che questo passo possa aiutare la causa e i nostri atleti, ma so che non lo farà.

As a consequence of the non-action of the IFSC I resign with immediate effect from my voluntary position in the IFSC Medical Commission.
Hereby I am drawing the same consequence as our MedCom president. We share the opinion that as medical doctors we can no longer accept the non-action of the IFSC concerning the RED-S problems of our athletes.
I have been a #MedCom member since the inauguration of the IFSC in 2009. During that time frame we achieved many goals for the well-being of our athletes. However, the current politics with regards to RED-S cannot be accepted. We have worked for more than 10 years on the topic. We have collected numerous data, have measured BMI/MI at every WorldCup last year and have developed very profound plans how to detect and help athletes with such problems. We have spent many hours in meetings and on the desk establishing a new and better system of monitoring and decision making. As a consequence, we now have the most profound data on this matter of all sport disciplines. We have pointed out the problem and possible solutions to the sports director and board continuously and repeatedly. However, the only acknowledgement we have received has consisted of defamation and discouragement. In short, the IFSC may not be willing at all to undertake further action regarding this important health issue of its athletes and is acitvely delaying and slowing down any decisions that could lead to much needed action.
As medical doctors we cannot accept this any longer.
Sport climbing has a RED-S problem.
Possible solutions to detect, evaluate and help critical athletes were developed through the Medical Commission.
These solutions have been and are being ignored. No further action is taken by the IFSC.
For the wellbeeing of our athletes and the development of this sport, I cannot take any responsibility on this matter and am forced to resign.
Many thanks to my long-time colleagues and friends in the Medical Commission for their work and efforts, especially to our president Dr.Eugen Burtscher.
I hope this step may help the cause and our athletes but I know it won‘t.
