Martedì 1 novembre 2022, il francese Sébastien Bouin ha liberato l’antico progetto di partenza diretta di “Jumbo Love”, chiamandolo “Supreme Jumbo Love”.
La partenza diretta per Jumbo Love è stata tentata per la prima volta da Chris Sharma nel 2010, dopo la sua salita della linea originale nel 2008. La variante diretta aggiunge circa 20 m di nuova arrampicata (9a), prima di unirsi alla linea originale Jumbo Love.
Secondo Seb, questa nuova via vale 9b+ e, come tale, diventa la via più difficile delle Americhe.
Questa settimana, Seb ha anche avuto il piacere della compagnia dell’originale chiodatore della via e visionario Randy Leavitt (nella foto sotto con Seb)..
Alcuni pensieri di Seb:
“Alcuni momenti speciali lassù, al freddo e al vento. C’era tutto l’amore per l’arrampicata, il posto, le persone intorno e questo deserto. Questa via e questo luogo sono nella mia mente da quando ho iniziato ad arrampicare. Finire questo viaggio liberando la partenza diretta non avrebbe potuto essere più perfetto. Lo sforzo è davvero lungo, con l’aggiunta di 20 metri di 9a prima del passaggio chiave di Jumbo Love. Segue la seconda parte di Jumbo Love che è davvero fisica e pompante. La ciliegina sulla torta è l’ultima placca di 20m. Una placca difficile in cui devi sapere cosa fai. Sono quasi caduto sulla placca… e l’avevo scalata pulito già due volte. Ma questa volta ero davvero stanco per tutta la via fatta in continuità.
Il percorso è di circa 70m e ala fine il duro di questo percorso è combinare tutto.
Il primo 9a è piuttosto complicato ed è facile cadere, anche se hai la potenza.
Poi hai questo punto cruciale di Jumbo Love, dove bisogna centrare lanciando a un monodito.

On Tuesday November 1st 2022, French climber Sébastien Bouin made the first ascent of the long-standing direct-start project to ‘Jumbo Love’, naming it ‘Suprême Jumbo Love’.
The direct start to Jumbo Love was first attempted by Chris Sharma in 2010, following his ascent of the original line in 2008. The direct variation adds around 20m of new hard (9a) climbing, before joining up with the original Jumbo Love line.
In Seb’s opinion, this new line weighs in at a grade of 9b+ and, as such, becomes the most difficult climb in the Americas.
This week, Seb also had the pleasure of the company of the route’s original bolter and visionary Randy Leavitt, while he was going for the send.
Some thoughts from Seb:
“Some special moments up there, in the cold and the wind.
There was whole lotta love for climbing, the place, the people around, and this desert.
This route and this place have been in my mind since I started climbing.
Finishing this trip by sending the direct start couldn’t be more perfect.
The effort is really long, adding 20 meters of hard climbing before the crux of Jumbo Love. Followed by the second part of Jumbo Love which is really physical and pumpy. The icing on the cake is the last slab of 20m. A tricky slab where you have to know what you do.
I almost fell on the slab… and I had done it twice before. But this time I was really tired from the whole direct route.
The route is around 70m and the hardest part of this route is to combine everything.
The first 9a is quite tricky, and it’s easy to fall, even if you have the power.
Then you have this Jumbo Love crux, where it’s definitely possible to fall even if you have the power (missing the one-finger pocket).
Then you need this fresh energy to link all the pumpy part to reach the lip of the overhang.
The last slab is not that hard, but if you are done, and you don’t know it quite well… you can easily fall there too.

The first time I made it through the direct start, it was my third try of the day. I was definitely too spent to have any chance on the main Jumbo Love section.
I knew I had to do the direct and the Jumbo Love crux on the first try if I wanted to have a chance on the pumpy Jumbo Love section.
Sometimes everything just comes together, shape, conditions, vibes, friends, cameraman, luck,…
I know it doesn’t happen that often, and I am very grateful to live such big moments.
